Peppermill Tournament – The ReRun

If you need some sporting competition to ward off the October blues, the Peppermill Netball Tournament is here to help!

Here’s what you need to know…

What is the Peppermill Tournament? The Peppermill Tournament is run by Netball Switzerland and is open to women’s teams from across Switzerland. It was originally scheduled to take place in Zurich in April 2013, but horrendous weather meant it was called off. It will now take place in Geneva where there are some indoor facilities.

When is it? Saturday 12th October 2013

Who can go? It’s a ladies-only tournament but all levels are welcome. You just need to sign up here

Where is it?  Salles des Fêtes, Moillebin et des Sports, route de Moillebin 20, 1256 Troinex – this is a suburb of Geneva, about 20 mins drive from the centre.

When does it start? Arrive by 9.30am; start at 10am. Finals at 5pm.

Do I need to book a hotel? If you can cope with an early start, the 6.04am train from Zurich HBF will get you there in time. Otherwise, you can discuss sharing accommodation with your team.

Once we have everyone signed up, we will be in touch with the players who are going to organise travel, accommodation and who will be in which team.

Any questions, just let the committee know!

Tournament Season is upon us!

Can you believe that we have THREE upcoming tournaments? It’s almost as if netball is starting to make some ground in Switzerland! Woop!

This weekend is the Copenhagen tournament, and we wish both teams from Zurich Netball Club the best of luck. Let’s get those cow-bells a-ringing!

Basel has recently started up their own netball club and are hosting a friendly tournament on Saturday 21st of September. Let’s all go along and support a beginning club!

And then there’s the big one… The Peppermill Challenge, Switzerland’s national tournament that pits us against the big-wigs of the French side: Saturday October 12th.  Last year we brought the trophy  over the rösti line for the first time, and we are most definitely working on making that happen again! We’re happy to welcome the new Zug club (woot!) into the mix too! Yay for closer netball clubs! We will have two trials for this tournament to ensure we send the best team we can.

The winners of the 2012 Peppermill Challenge: Zurich! Let’s do it again!
Interested in bringing a friend to netball one night? Now is a great time! Spread the word, and see you Wednesday!

Copenhagen in our sights!

There is only one training session left before we send two fit and ready teams to battle it out in Copenhagen! We are so excited to be able to participate in this mixed tournament, and to be brining two gentlemen along to help win the trophy. We did it last time, we can do it again!

Since the finale of our Lion’s League, trainings have been focused on fitness, skills and games. We have really upped our training standards, and the attendance has been great the last few weeks. Let’s keep it up!

See you on Wednesday, everyone, and feel free to bring a friend or two! It’s the perfect time, as we begin to think about the upcoming Swiss tournament, the Peppermill Challenge.

Lion’s League – The Half-Way Results

Well, folks, our current Lion’s League season is half-way through. Can you believe it? As the weather begins to show real signs that summer still exists, we have been playing and training outdoors for the last few weeks. We’d love to see more of you at our in-between training sessions! How could you not want to sign up with such artful names as Decisive Defending, Mastering Mid-Court and The Art of Attack. And if you see yourself as merely one of these, remember that the BEST netballers are those that are versatile! And a player becomes a real powerhouse when they know exactly what their opposition is up to… So come along!

And now it’s time for our Lion’s League run-down — a summary of how teams are going so far. We’ve lost a few players along the way to work commitments, injuries and such, which is a shame, and we hope to see them all back on court as soon as possible. Your teams are missing you! Team D is currently in a definitive first place, though they have only actually played and won one ‘official’ game – every other time their opponent sadly has had to forfeit. So let’s all prove to our team how committed we are for the next half!

Results Thus Far:

5 points for win
3 points for draw
1 point for a loss with more than 50 % of the goals
0 points for loss with less than 50% of the goals

Team A: Schläfli, (Captain: Ann) = 6 points
Team B: Badiblüemli, (Captain: Lara) = 10 points
Team C: Heugümper, (Captain: Anne Marie and Deborah) = 2 points
Team D: Luusmeitli, (Captain: Jenny) = 20 points

8th May
A vs B -> 25:8
C vs D -> 14:27

22nd May

D was the only complete team, all others forfeited.

5th June
A vs D (A forfeit)
B vs C -> 24:18

19th June
C vs D (C forfeit)
A vs B -> 22:23  (GREAT game, ladies!)

Remember, girls and guys (where are all our men, by the way?), we are only half way through the season!

Anything can happen!

A Surprising Silver for the Swiss Team!

Zurich Netball Club is so proud to have had six of its members represent Switzerland recently for the European Open Netball Championships. Joh Sargeant shares her (somewhat long) story 🙂

What an experience it was to travel with the 2013 Swiss open netball team to Aberdeen for the European Open Netball Championships. We are all so proud to have played our little hearts out and to have brought home runners-up medals for Switzerland!

We spent the day of the 29th of May travelling to bonny Scotland, all proudly displaying our Swiss tracksuits on the journey, keeping tabs of how many people asked us ‘what is netball’ and in how many languages. We were all visibly bubbling over with excitement at finally having arrived, after five months of preparation.

 Thursday morning was our first training session, gearing up for the ominous match against Scotland later that day. After eyeing off the competition in the hotel and then also on the bus on our way to the venue (tension!), we valiantly fought a game that showcased our abilities as a developing netballing nation. Running out onto court for our first match against Scotland was certainly a terrifying and exhilarating experience. Seeing the Scottish players tower over (most of) us was just a reassertion of what an enormous competition we are participating in and how lucky we were to have been chosen to represent Switzerland. Our defenders sure got a good workout throughout that match, with the final score being 73 – 11. The score didn’t seem to deter a few young netballing enthusiasts, though, who were still eager in asking for our autographs. Punishment was in the form of our first ice-bath of the tournament.

Friday saw a day of training and tactics in preparation for the following two days of matches. After our dramatic loss the day before, We had a very tough and very necessary training session, reevaluating our tactics and preparing for following two days of competition. We spent the afternoon either exploring the local castles or the Marks and Spencers of Aberdeen, returning to the court in the early evening. There, we continued our tactical game-plan, writing detailed notes on our personal opponents for our upcoming games as the Republic of Ireland played, and beat, Gibraltar.

 Saturday saw a morning filled with visits to David, our osteopath, for massages, strapping, treatments and advice, plus another training session in preparation for our game against the ROI. Despite all our hard work, we lost to Ireland 16-48, though we basked in the small glimmer of light that the margin between our scores was at least better than when Ireland had played Gibraltar. We certainly didn’t expect that it was this fact that would end up winning us the runners up medal!

All of our efforts were working towards the nail-biting match against Gibraltar. We had been watching them, analysing them, staring them down as we each ate our porridge across the room from each other aImaget breakfast. We knew that we simply had to beat them if we were to potentially move up in the international rankings. And we knew that, for this amazing 2013 team, it was a possibility. We were prepared and we were pumped! The first quarter started brilliantly, where we pulled ahead right from the first whistle with a three goal lead. Part-way through the second quarter, Switzerland was 8 goals down but (perhaps with a timely injury call…) we managed to pull it back, with the help from many a ringing cow-bell in the stands! In the last half of the game the score was even, neither of us managing to tiptoe ahead of the other. Our hearts were racing and every member of our bench was screaming for us. The tension between the two teams could be felt throughout the stadium, as more and more spectators came to watch the nerve-wracking conclusion to the match. The final few minutes ticked by, neither team gaining ground against the other. As is fitting to the hard work, determination and fight that both teams brought to the court that day, the game concluded with a score of 28-28. Whether we were on the bench or on the court, this engrossing game will be one that every single one of us will remember.

Receiving our runners-up medals at the closing ceremony was a real glory moment for each team member, as well as for our incredible support staff that worked tirelessly to get us to that point. To our coach, Victoria Knights, our assistant coaches Jen Fields and Peta Samios, our manager, Jo Garner, our osteopath, David Lewis and our delegate, Emma Connolly, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. And a special congratulations to our Queen of Defence, Claudia Almer, who received the Player of the Championship! We are all so proud of you! Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the trials for the 2014 Swiss team!

Zurich Netball runs the SOLA

On May 4th, a bunch of our dedicated netballers put on their running shoes once more and joined 892 other teams for the annual Zurich SOLA run. It was our second time running the SOLA, and we can all be proud of these runners for beating last year’s time by 38 minutes with a total of  10:58:20 hours, bettering their overall place by 62 teams!

Image

Nine of our members and a four of their friends got together to run 116.6km in legs of between 4.1 and 14.1km. A big well done to our club members, Barbara (who had to start at 7.30am), Sophie (with the longest leg of 14.1km), our club president Jo Cackett (showing us how it’s done by battling up the Üetliberg), Jen H, Ann-Marie, Lilia, Lara, Lucy and Christine, as well as to their brave friends and family, Roger, Matthias, Matthew, Caitlin’s Dad and Uli. The sun eventually came out in the evening to shine over a well-deserved pizza and pasta dinner.

A great achievement by all our runners. We’re proud of you, and thanks for doing such a great job at representing our club!

The Ancient Arts of Attack: training 15th May

Our Lion’s League match nights will alternate with training sessions to help everyone get better at netball.

This week, turn up ready to learn how to attack in style. If you want to get better at any of the attacking positions, here’s your chance: coaches Claudia and Phil are going to look at drills and set plays that will help you to raise your game in the attacking stakes, then put it into practice with some games.

It’s a good chance to try things out with your Lion’s League team without the pressure of a game, so get your attacking mindset geared up and good to go!

If you’re normally a defender, it’s worth attending too, just to see how the other half thinks..

Lions’ League roars to life

Image

The new Zurich Netball Club league will see 4 teams from the club battle it out for the title of Lions’ League Champions Summer 2013. Starting on Wed 8th May at 7pm, match nights will take place every other Wednesday night; all teams will play every match night at the International Community School in Zumikon.

If you didn’t manage to sign up for a team, you can still come along and be a substitute player, umpire or scorer, or just to cheer your pals on. Just keep your fingers crossed that the sunny spring weather keeps going so we can play outside!

Check back for regular updates on how the league is progressing.

Raaaaaaaaar… it’s the Lions’ League!

POSTPONEMENT OF PEPPERMILL CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT

In view of a very poor weather forecast for Zurich this weekend the Netball Switzerland and Zurich committees have taken the decision to POSTPONE the Peppermill Challenge Trophy tournament scheduled for this weekend on Saturday 20th.

The decision has not been taken lightly and is not without having tried to obtain access to indoor facilities but we hope that this event can be one that is a positive and fun experience in the longer term – giving us the opportunity to celebrate some great domestic Netball but to also have the chance to socialise and enjoy the experience rather than huddle out of the rain in cold conditions.

The revised date for the re run will be in June 2013 – date to be confirmed – please check back in the next few days for an update.

[Please note that the Open Team training will now go ahead on Saturday and also Sunday as planned.]
