Peppermill 2023

Before the sun rose in Zurich the alarms of the 10 Zurich Team netball players rang, it was time to head to Lausanne. We were maybe not quite mentally prepared yet for the 13 hour day ahead but the rush of are we going to make the train was well underway. With seconds to spare almost the whole team made it… thankfully we have some quick drivers amongst us.

Arriving in Lausanne we didn’t let the rainy conditions dampen the mood as we were preparing for 4 20 minute matches of netball against Nyon, GIN, Lausanne and Aubonne 2. With a quick change we ran into warm up for the first match up of the day against Nyon, we knew it being the first match of the day our nerves would come into play. But by the second half we only let Nyon sink 1 ball, what a defensive masterclass from the team, leading to a final score of 19-7.

We then faced our favourite rivals and changing room buddies GIN. End to end as always we finished with a close defeat of 12-15. For the third match we lined up against the tall defensive Lausanne team, another end to end battle finishing with another close defeat of 11-12. The muscles were definitely now sore but that did not stop us from playing the final game against Aubonne 2s right to the final whistle, the match finished 10-21 with Aubonne snatching the victory.

What a day of netball, we are so proud of the whole team and our 6 new players who joined the line up this year. We are also extremely proud to have our very own, Sarah Hannibal picking up the Players Player award of the tournament. Congratulations again Sarah on behalf of the whole club, and you are definitely our Players Player too!

We cannot wait for more netball action as we line up for the next League Match on the 30th April against AGNA in Geneva. Hopp Zürich!

Our main highlight of the month was the opportunity we had to host all the Swiss Netball teams in the League for the 4th round of the season! We would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters who came out for a fun day of Netball and we look forward to hosting again next season.

In the league this month, we played for the second time against GIN. It was such a tight game keeping all our supporters and spectators on the edge of their seats. Congratulations to GIN for coming away with the victory 23-17, but don’t worry we are well up for a rematch 😉 Not only did we have the league matches but also we were able to organise a friendly game for any of the travelling teams as well as the Zurich Club members who wanted to play. After a full day of Netball madness the activities continued with a Match Tea full of treats baked by our very own Zurich Netball Club Members as well as social drinks organised in the evening in central Zurich. Thank you to all those involved and making this a memorable League Day.

In February Zurich Netball Club also collaborated with Stiftung IdéeSport an NGO promoting sport across Switzerland for children and young people. A group of coaches went along to show the group of munchkins what Netball is and to help spread awareness of the game in the region. Again thank you to our coaches for taking part and supporting this initiative.

Next month we have the long anticipated annual Peppermill Tournament where Zurich will once again be sending a team to compete in multiple matches against other Swiss teams. Supporters are more than welcome to come along on the 26th March at the International School of Lausanne!

Weisser oder Roter Glühwein… let’s bereal!

Whether you want to play more competitively or to get your exercise in once a week and make some new friends. Drop an email to zurichnetball@gmail.com and we will give you all the details. We will be kicking off the year on January 10th and we would love to see some new faces! Trainings are every Tuesdays 19:00 at ICS International School Zurich.

League Team 3rd December 2022 with AGNA

As we began to wind down for the Christmas break our League Team travelled down to Geneva for the last league game of 2022 against Aubonne. The team played fabulously to win 43-22, congratulations and thank you to all our players, reserves and coaches. Our next match will be against GGNA on the 14th January back in Geneva once again!

SAVE THE DATE! On the 4th February Zurich will be hosting all the league matches on home turf. We would love to get as many supporters as possible, we will be posting more details on the event soon.

For our monthly social, Leah organised a lovely meet up at the Zurich Christmas Market. Where we had the choice of ‘Weisser oder Roter Glühwein’, also known as mulled red or white wine. Some may say, surprisingly, the most popular amongst our team was the mulled white wine! It was great to catch up with old and new faces of the club so keep your eyes peeled for our next social for more fun!

And the answer is…

It was time for Zurich netball to put their knowledge to the test! In the first social organised by Leah, we took part in the Kennedy’s Pub Quiz Night. From Brit and Mon’s Aussie knowledge to Abby’s insights to Gibraltan Monkey you can safely say we out performed our expectations. Although we did not snatch the winning prize we did win a round of shots for the table with Emily’s excellent guessing skills in a game of heads and tails. Thank you Leah for organising and we look forward to more Pub Quizs in the future. Don’t forget our next social on 16th December, where we will be hitting up the Christmas Market in Zurich. If you’re interested in partaking please get in contact we’d love to have you join in on the fun!

There were no league games this month, but the next league match was just around the corner. On the 3rd of December Zurich sent a team to Geneva, where they took on AGNA (Aubonne Girls Netball Association). More to come on this event in our December post, Hopp Zürich!! Spoilers available on our Instagram.

If your looking to keep up to date with all the news and events at Zurich Netball, give us a follow on our Instagram @zurichnetball or if you’d like to get involved at our next training session send an email to zurichnetball@gmail.com and show up on Tuesdays at 19:00 at ICS International School Zurich – all are welcome.

And Just Like That…

Our trainings for 2021 are over!

2021 has been another challenging year but we finished the year off strongly!

In August, we had our long awaited House Warming Party which saw old and new faces coming together to play netball for the first time in a long time! Since then we have had enjoyed fantastic attendance and welcomed lots of new members to the Zurich Netball Club family!

In November, we focused on match play and defensive and offensive play and finished the month off with a full match! In a hotly contested game, the Pink Panthers just edged out the Smurfettes to win the game. We were also able to have an AGM in person this year in November, after having to have a virtual meeting last year. It was great to be back in The Outback Lodge in Stadelhofen after such a long absence. The new committee for 2022 was announced (details of which you can find here). We also say a big thank you to Lyndsay Lomax and Lorna Rettig, who are taking a well-deserved break from committee duties in 2022 but will still be around to keep our attacking circle strong!

The winners of the annual awards were also announced at the meeting. Congratulations to the following worthy winners in 2021:

Player of the Year – shared between Konio and Emily

Virtual Player of the Year – Abby

Best Newcomer – Pasqualina

Miss Motivator (for keeping us going with fitness sessions during Lockdown) – Lorna and Jess VR

We only had two training sessions in December but because of the fantastic attendance we were also able to get some full match play practice in, which will come in handy for when in January when Zurich Netball will be joining the Swiss Netball Monte Rosa league for the first time. We are already looking forward to more match play against other clubs in Switzerland!

We will be back early next year for more netballing fun. Follow us on Instagram @zurichnetballclub for weekly photos and videos of our training and matches!

In the meantime, thank you for supporting Zurich Netball Club! We wish you a very Merry Christmas wherever you are in the world and wish you a good and safe start into 2022!

Back to Netball

After what seems like an age, it is almost time to celebrate moving to our new home!

If you remember back to October last year, we finally found a new home for Zürich Netball Club only for the latest lockdown to hit. Now that things have calmed down again we are finally able to have our big reopening and invite everyone back to netball!

On Tuesday 24th August we will be back in the sports hall at Schule Kolbenacker at 8pm for netball, fitness and a lot of fun. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all back. It’s been a long time since all the club members were back together but absence does make the heart grow fonder.

However, it’s not just old members were are looking to welcome back. We are also hoping that all the time trapped indoors with no sports to do has meant that some people in Zürich and the surrounding areas have been wondering about taking up a new hobby or coming back to netball. If that is you then please come a join us!

We plan to have a fun evening with lots of netball. If you have no experience and just want to try that’s no problem. All training will be provided ‘on the job’.’

If you are interested in joining us and celebrating our new home, please make sure you sign the Doodle so we know how many people to expect and we comply to current Covid regulations for track and trace.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at zurichnetball@gmail.com and one of the committee members will get back to you!

Online Training

Due to the evolution of the current situation, the Committee decided to postpone the launch of our new training venue until a time when it is safe for us all to be together again. We know that you are all as disappointed as we are but hope you understand our reasons for doing so.

The good news is the ‘suprise’ we had planned will not spoil and can also happen at a later date (Hint: the surprise wasn’t cake!). So no one is going to miss out on anything!

Of course, we know that this is a difficult time for everyone and so we want to continue our training and get together on a weekly basis (as if Covid-19 didn’t exist) as planned. From Tuesday 3rd November, we will be holding weekly Zoom sessions for a quick chat and then some exercises to keep our members fit at home!

All members should have received a Zoom link so you can join at 8pm on Tuesday. The session will run for around 40 minutes in total. All you need is your workout clothes, a mat, a towel and a bottle of water – and internet connection. If any member hasn’t received the link please drop us an email and we will forward it to you.

As usual please sign up on the Doodle so we know who we are waiting for. Here is the link to the Doodle.

Also it is now that time of year when we are looking for new members for the Committee for next year so that we can continue to run the club as well as we possibly can. If you are interested, or want to find out more, please drop us a line. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a member of the club, how long you’ve been in Switzerland or how long you’ve been playing netball for. The more people we have, the more fun activities we will be able to deliver to members.

In the meantime, please stay healthy, wear a mask and keep to social distancing rules, as Committee members Jess and Claudia are demonstrating superbly in this picture!

New place, New time, New venue!

Apart from everything else, Covid-19 left Zurich Netball Club homeless. Not having a home was okay during the summer months with the nice weather and the light evenings but it wasn’t going to be a solution forever.

The Committee have worked very hard over the past few months, trying to get a suitable venue so that our club can continue to play and raise the profile of netball in Switzerland. It was looking likely that we weren’t going to find anywhere to play this winter but at the final whistle, we managed to find a new permanent home.

This means that from next week we will be training for the first time in our new home. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to find a venue on the same time and day as our previous home. We realise this might not be convenient for everyone in the short- and long-term but faced with this and no netball at all (**faints**) we had to take the only option we had.

As of 27th October, we will be:

At: Schule Kolbenacker Oben in Zürich Seebach (Sperletweg 71, 8052, Zürich)

On: Tuesdays

From: 20.00 until 21.30

See our How To Find Us page for more details of how to get there! And please remember: NO OUTDOOR SHOES to be worn in the hall.

As there is still a risk presented by the Covd-19 situation, please:

  1. Sign up on our Doodle to let us know you are coming or update it if you are no longer able to attend
  2. Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell (for your and your team mate’s safety)
  3. Wear masks in the entrance hall and in the changing rooms as per the current guidelines

We also have a super exciting suprise for all members who have paid their subscription this year. So make sure you are there!

We are very much looking forward to our ‘hall warming’ and hope as many of you as possible are able to attend. It’ll be lovely to see (half) your faces again!

And here are a few photos of the sessions we ran over the summer to get you back in the mood for netball!

Restarting Netball

Since March, Zurich Netball Club have been keeping their minds sharp during lockdown with a monthly virtual quiz. Questions on art, science, sport, movie and even celebrity deaths (!) have been posed to our members, who have been more than happy to show off their brains. Congratulations to the winners of our lockdown quizzes: Julie, Lakshmi, Claudia and Lorna!

A busy night at the Zoom-ikon Arms Pub Quiz

Now our brains are finely tuned, it is time to get back on the netball court… almost! Summer fitness sessions will begin next Wednesday 15th July at 7pm until 8pm outside at Sihlhölzli (Manessestrasse 1, 8003 Zürich) until 26th August to help lose those lockdown kilos before proper training begins in again in September.

If you haven’t already signed up yet, add your name to the Doodle by clicking here so we know to expect you!

Due to the current circumstances, we will be adhering to social distancing rules and the recommendations of Swiss Netball and Swiss Olympic. The main rules that we ask everyone to stick to are below:

1. Do not attend if you have any symptoms of COVID-19

2. We will need to take attendance for each session

3. Everyone washes/disinfects their hands at the beginning/end of training

4. Everyone maintains physical distancing throughout the training (2m / 10m2 per person)

5. There will be a defined responsible person to ensure the above rules are followed

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact a member of the committee and we get back to you as soon as possible.

The Committee are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in real life on Wednesday!

Coronavirus Update

As you will already be aware the Coronavirus pandemic is having huge consequences around the world and Zurich Netball Club is no exception to this.

The Club Calendar has now been updated to show that all club trainings until 19th April have been cancelled, as advised by the Swiss government. We hope that we will be back to training as soon as possible after this date but we will have to see how the situation is nearer the time. Of course, we will let you know when the information is available.

It does mean that we have also cancelled the ‘Bring a Bloke’ night and the ‘Easter Extravaganza’ and socials that were planned for the beginning of April. It is super disappointing but it’s far better that everyone stays healthy and safe.

The Committee have also made the decision to cancel their next meeting on the 2nd April. But the minutes for the last meeting on 5th March are now available to view in the Calendar so you can find out what the Committee have been discussing.

As the world is slowly grinding to a halt, we will still be posting photos and videos on social media (because we have already taken enough to last us for the next 3 seasons) and we will be soon start publishing the Player Profiles for 2020 so you can get to know your teammates better!

Also to help you stay fit for netball, a ‘Netball at Home’ email will be sent out to all email subscribers each Wednesday so that you can get your netball fix. No excuse!

In the meantime, we wish all our members, alumni and followers around the world the best of health. Stay Safe and Stay Positive!
