Another busy week

It’s been another busy week for everyone at Zurich Netball Club.

On Monday the newly-elected committee met for the first time in 2020 to start planning for the season. Different topics were discussed including: tournaments to enter, social events for the year and (everyone’s favourite part of being a member of a sports club) the possibility of new kit.

Claudia, Lorna, Jess, Lyndsay, Emma and the other Jess (!) are very excited about the plans for the season and helping all members enjoy their netball as much as possible. If you’re not sure who we are or what we do, you can read more on The Committee page.

Going for goal!

As discussed at the AGM in December, we are now using the Club Calendar on the website as the go-to place for all things Zurich Netball. It has been updated with training dates for the whole year. Monthly socials after training are back on the agenda, which will be combined with a special themed training night. The first one will take place on 5th February, when we will be celebrating Fasnacht – start planning your costumes now!

On Wednesday night we were training as usual and, after a warm-up and a few drills, we had a mini-tournament with three teams battling it out to win a delicious, Swiss chocolate bar. Lots of new members have joined us in January, some of which are completely new to netball, so it was great to see everyone getting stuck in, learning something new and enjoying playing matches.

It was also a great opportunity to practice umpiring and scoring which are important parts of the game.

The joint winners of the round robin tournament were the Blue and Green team who both won two games each. In a cruel twist of fate (and because we hadn’t planned on there being a tie for overall first place), the Yellow team were awarded Swiss chocolate for their efforts!

The traditional post-training selfie!

We still have one more training session left in January and quite a few people are still on course for full attendance for the month, meaning they will enjoy a drink on the club at the next social event. Hope to see you all next week at training!

First training of the new decade

On Wednesday Zurich Netball Club were back to training for the first time in 2020. We had a fantastic turnout for the first session back. It would be great to think that everyone was super keen because they had playing netball over the festive period but some (myself included) were glad to be doing something active after indulging too much over Christmas!

After warming up we focused on ball skills in pairs to get us used to catching and throwing again. The drills were a combination of lobs and chest passes as well as mini-competitions to see which pair were the fastest without dropping the ball.

Then we split into two teams for match practice. We mixed it up a bit by selecting a bib at random so lots of us were playing positions that were new to us. This meant we had to use our brains and we learnt something about other positions on the court.

To finish we managed the dreaded cool down/core training which was difficult after such a long absence. Hopefully this part of training will get easier in the coming weeks.

It was so nice to see everyone after the winter break and some new faces to the club came to training as well. New members are always welcome to join. If you would like to come along and try netball for the first time or even get back into a sport that you used play, please get in touch with the committee at zurichnetball@gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook.

Jump Into Jan!

The Christmas and New Year’s celebrations are long behind us and you’ve probably already had your first day back in work in 2020. Combine that with the facts that exercise routines during the festive season have gone out of the window and you might be weighing slightly more than you did 2 weeks ago and January can be a depressing month.

If only there was a way to banish the blues and get back into a healthy routine?

Well, there is! Come and Jump Into Jan with Zurich Netball Club. With skills training, core conditioning and match practices, there isn’t a better way to kick-start your health goals in 2020. As an added incentive, the best attendees in January will be treated to a drink down the local as a reward. Just come to the sessions on 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of January and a refreshing cool drink will be waiting for you.

Or perhaps this is the year that you promised yourself that you would try something new. Netball is a great sport to help improve your fitness, reaction times and is fantastic fun! Why don’t you come along for a taster of why 20 million people in 72 countries are mad about this sport?

As a club we are always looking for new players to come join us. It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced player or a complete novice. If you would like to be part of a social sporting society, feel free to email the committee at zurichnetball@gmail.com.

We hope to see you on the 8th so we can all Jump Into Jan together!thumbnail_image22

AGM and Christmas Party

This week the AGM and Christmas Party for all the members of Zurich Netball Club was held. That means it is almost Christmas (yay!) but there is no more netball this decade (boo!).

It was a great turnout with 20 members of the club coming together to celebrate a great year which included success at two international tournaments, matches against our local rvials in Zug and watching the Netball World Cup in the pub.

The committee revealed their goals for the club for next year which included a strategy to encourage more regular attendance at training and a plan to increase the amount of netball that is played. All members of the club are welcome to share their ideas and thoughts and, if anyone is keen to volunteer to help us reach our goals in 2020, please let a member of the committee know. Teamwork makes the dream work!

The night was rounded off with an awards presentation that was voted for by members. The winners were:

Player of the Year: Joint winners were Claudia and Lorna

Most Improved Player: Kim

Most Consistent Player: Emma S

Best Newcomer: Kiara

Biggest Personality/Biggest Mouth: Jess B

Our amazing coach and President, Claudia said, “I am proud to be president of this wonderful club because of you all, and I look forward to more netball with each and everyone of you next year.”

2019 was a great year but let’s make 2020 even better!

Success in Amsterdam!

On October 12th, Zürich Netball Club participated in the Amsterdam Netball Tournament alongside 17 other teams from cities all across Europe. Our Zürich team was Lorna, Jess, Sarah H, Becky, Konio and Claudia, joined by Sarah G from Geneva and Steph from Amsterdam. At the tournament we met up with old friends from other clubs, and made plenty new, sharing together our love of netball.

After a short grading round, Zürich were placed into the “Plate” Division (“Cup” and “Shield” were the other two). We played 5 games in the Plate Division, winning 4 and drawing 1. These results got us in the Finals, playing against the team we drew against, the Glamazons!

The finals were a tough match, but captain Lorna kept us focused and we fought through to win 14-6. Congratulations Züri! Our amazing GA Konio won MVP for the Zürich team. We had a great time both on court and off in Amsterdam.

Thank you to Amsterdam Netball Club for the wonderful tournament, can’t wait for the next one!

August Summer Break!

As everyone continues their summer holidays, enjoying soaking up the sun and swimming in the lake, we’re having a summer break from Netball.

We’ll be back in September, kicking off Wednesday night training sessions again from the 4th of September. We’ll get back into weekly netball training sessions, monthly Zug matches, and preparation for the Amsterdam tournament in October.

The next tournament we are preparing for is Amsterdam in October! On the weekend of the 12th, there is expected to be 18 teams competing from all around Europe. Only a couple of months away, time to start training! Please reach out to the Zurich Netball Committee if you are interested in attending.

Due to the recent heatwave, we’ve had to replace our last couple of Wednesday night training sessions with Swim & Gin sessions. For the rest of July, we expect to be back on the court, though due to summer holidays, low attendance may move us back to the lake! Keep an eye on your inbox for updates.

Summertime Netball in June!

The sun is out and we’re jumping for joy because Summer is here, meaning we can finally play outside!
